Our school counsellor brings a wealth of experience and expertise in order to provide counselling services as requested by students, staff or families. Sometimes a child needs a safe place to talk, play or journey through the restorative justice process to resolve conflict peacefully.
Play is an integral part of counselling services at Muriel Martin as children communicate through play. Whether a child is participating in sand play, puppets, Lego, art activities or games, they are communicating their experiences and feelings in a natural and self-healing process.
Another important role of the school counsellor at Muriel Martin is to coordinate services for students with special needs. This includes but is not limited to the following: psycho-educational assessment as recommended by the learning team, coordination of Individual Program Plans (IPPs) for students, coordination of Success in School plans for students in care, and requesting consultants as needed for students with special needs.
The school counsellor is also the coordinator of our Roots of Empathy Program. A strong foundation of emotional literacy and perspective taking is created in part through our Roots of Empathy Program. Our school counsellor is part of the team of instructors building caring, peaceful and civil societies through the development of empathy in children.
